Dumfries House Food Education Programme – Education Officer
We are pleased to announce that Mr Stephen R Kay has been appointed as Education Officer
The vision for Dumfries House is not only for the house to be a cultural visitor attraction but to act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the local area. As part of this, Dumfries House Trust plans to establish an education programme for school children to support understanding of food, the environment, diet and nutrition and demonstrate excellence through the development and dissemination of innovative approaches to food and sustainability.

Education
From the 6th -10th June Historic Scotland are running taster session for the local schools.
They will be delivering workshops on Masonry, Plumbing, Slating, Brickwork and Joinery. Children from Auckinleck, Cumnock, Kilmarnock and Newmilnes will get hands on experience at all the sessions. Staff from Historic Scotland will be show them the traditional ways to work with these materials. It’ll be a great chance for the pupils to get an insight in to how craftsmen worked at the time the house was built in 1754.
Peach Garden
The peach garden team of Sue Veitch, Sandra Wallace and Lorna Kerr have been really busy these last few weeks.
Sweet peas grown from Highgrove seed are climbing nicely up the hazel supports. Delphiniums donated by the Delphinium Society are in and doing well, we wait in anticipation to see the colours that will emerge. The garden is a great haven for wildlife, song birds frequent it every day, as do the woodpecker and tree creeper. We are always on the lookout for more vollies, so if you have some time to spare on a Tuesday, why not get in touch and lend us a hand.
New guide book
A new guidebook reflecting all the changes that the house has undergone will be available and on sale at the Dumfries House shop from May 31st.
The guidebook includes photographs of the rooms in their current splendour as well as old pictures and documents which chart the history of this magnificent 18th century treasure.
